Biofuels and Broilers --- Competitors or Cooperators

چکیده

The rapid increase in production of ethanol from corn and other grains and biodiesel from various fats and oils has resulted in growing quantities of byproducts from these industries, primarily distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) from the ethanol industry and glycerol from biodiesel production. The use of DDGS in poultry and swine diets is not new, but the supply of product encourages the use of higher percentages than has typically been used in the past. As greater quantities are used in the diet, it becomes increasingly essential that accurate nutrient values be assigned to the product. This review attempts to summarize results from various laboratories to provide a nutrient matrix that can be used to evaluate the potential use of DDGS in poultry feeds. Glycerol from biodiesel production has had limited use in animal feeds but results from recent feeding trials indicate that it can be useful as a pure energy source at levels up to 5% of the diet.

Gone but Not Lost: the Different Performance Impacts of Employee Mobility between Cooperators versus Competitors

This article extends research on the relationship between employee mobility and firm performance by exploring how mobility between competitors and mobility between potential cooperators are different. We draw on social capital theory to argue that movement of employees both to and from clients may enhance firm performance, whereas only inward mobility from competitors benefits firms. We also hy...

The ring measure of social values: a computerized procedure for assessing individual differences in information processing and social value orientation

Personality can be defined from a social standpoint as a more or less consistent system of orientations that influences an individual's decisions and behaviors regarding the allocation of resources to self and others. One of the more robust models for the measurement of an individual's interpersonal utilities is McClintock's social value approach (McClintock, 1972). In the present study, we eva...

Non-Local Interaction via Diffusible Resource Prevents Coexistence of Cooperators and Cheaters in a Lattice Model

Many cellular populations cooperate through the secretion of diffusible extracellular resources, such as digestive enzymes or virulence factors. Diffusion of these resources leads to long-range intercellular interactions, creating the possibility of cooperation but also the risk of exploitation by non-producing neighbors. In the past, considerable attention has been given to game-theoretic latt...

Presence of a loner strain maintains cooperation and diversity in well-mixed bacterial communities.

Cooperation and diversity abound in nature despite cooperators risking exploitation from defectors and superior competitors displacing weaker ones. Understanding the persistence of cooperation and diversity is therefore a major problem for evolutionary ecology, especially in the context of well-mixed populations, where the potential for exploitation and displacement is greatest. Here, we demons...

Resistance is Futile

The Lemonade Game is a three-player game in which players have to pick locations on a circular board, which are as far away as possible from those chosen independently by other players. Players may observe other player’s moves and infer their strategies. The game was studied using a competition of cognitively motivated agents, which inherit properties of adaptivity and stochasticity from human ...
